This study examined a patient with both migraine and cluster headache. The imaging used was positron emission tomography during an active cluster headache. The patient received 1.2 glyceryl trinitate before the imaging. During the migraine, dorsal rostral brainstem activation occurred. Interestingly, there was no activation in the hypothalamus region. These findings suggest that migraine headaches involve the brainstem in significant ways. Additionally, they highlight different areas activated during cluster headaches. This research indicates a potential method for distinguishing primary headache types. Functional imaging could help differentiate between headache disorders typically diagnosed based on clinical evaluation.
