Mechanisms of Acupuncture on the Neurovascular Unit in Migraine: A Narrative Review.

Acupuncture may help treat migraines by protecting a key brain structure. This structure is called the neurovascular unit (NVU). The NVU plays an important role in migraine development. Researchers reviewed studies on how acupuncture affects the NVU. They found four main ways acupuncture helps. First, it reduces excessive neuron excitement and activates the body's pain control system. Second, it balances neurotransmitters and receptors to prevent inflammation. Third, acupuncture helps maintain the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This barrier is crucial for brain health. It improves the function of cells that form the BBB. Lastly, acupuncture influences energy metabolism in the brain. This review suggests that acupuncture could be a valuable treatment for migraines. More research is needed to fully understand its effects. However, these findings highlight acupuncture's potential benefits for people suffering from migraines. Clinical relevance: This research suggests that acupuncture may offer an effective treatment option for migraine patients by protecting the neurovascular unit and improving brain health.
