The Safety of OnabotulinumtoxinA (OnabotA) During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Implications for Chronic Migraines.

OnabotulinumtoxinA (OnabotA) is a treatment for chronic migraines. Migraines often affect women during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, treatment options are limited for these women. This study looked at the safety of OnabotA during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Researchers reviewed data from 555 pregnancies exposed to OnabotA. They found that 80.2% of these pregnancies resulted in full-term births. The study reported a loss rate of 17.5%. This included 73 spontaneous losses and 21 elective terminations. Only 1.6% of pregnancies had reported fetal anomalies. These rates align with general population statistics for miscarriages and fetal issues. The findings suggest that OnabotA may be safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. More research is needed to confirm these results and guide treatment decisions. Overall, this study provides important information for women suffering from chronic migraines during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
