Pharmacotherapy for chronic migraine prevention: a narrative review.

Chronic migraine (CM) is a serious condition affecting 1-2% of people. It causes significant pain and can disrupt daily life. This research reviews various treatments for preventing CM. The authors examined studies published up to April 2026. They focused on traditional oral medications, onabotulinumtoxinA, and new therapies like CGRP-targeted monoclonal antibodies. These treatments aim to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. Traditional medications are still common but often lack specific data for CM. Many treatments are based on studies for episodic migraines instead. The review highlights the need for therapies that specifically address CM. It also discusses the safety and effectiveness of these treatments for patients who have not responded to prior therapies. Overall, this research provides important insights into improving CM management and offers hope for better treatment options in the future.
